Scout Requirements

Cub Scout Adventure Menu – By Topic (Subject Matter) and By Rank Handbook

  • Handbook Adventures are included in the “Topic” row if a major element includes the subject matter, even if it could be “optional”.
  • Note: listing an Adventure in a Handbook column does not mean that it may only be done by Scouts working on that rank.  It would be sad if Rolling Tigers (Cycling) and A Bear Goes Fishing could only be done by Tigers and Bears respectively.  More on this below the chart.
  • Links are to the Adventure by Adventure resource pages in the Atlanta Area Council, Southern Crescent District
  • “(R)” indicates a “Required” Adventure, required to earn the Rank in the Handbook – all others are “Elective” Adventures.

Other Advancement pieces include the Bobcat Badge (a joining rank at all levels past Lion) and the Cyber Chip for First Grade and up, with an option for Scouts to instead complete the “Protect Yourself Rules” Adventure, which is current a “Preview” Adventure for all levels of Cub Scouting.

These Topics and Adventures from the Rank Handbooks are not the limit of what Cub Scouts can do as fun family, den and pack activities – there are many other activities that Cub Scouts can do.  The basic test is: is it fun for kids, fun for families and safe?  If so, it can be Cub Scouting.

Examples of activities that could be big activities – some of which have some “age appropriate” limits – include chess, photography, travel, geocaching, yoga, rock climbing, and horseback riding, as well as Yo-Yo (there is a Yo Yo Cub Scout “Preview” Adventure for Wolf and up – but there doesn’t need to be a “Preview” Adventure for a subject matter to be a Cub Scout Activity).  Other terrific activities that could be done with the right supervision and instruction, but that might be overlooked in the sports and games Adventures noted above, include ice skating, roller skating, skateboarding, scooters, skiing and snowboarding, table tennis, ultimate, disc golf, gymnastics, croquet, cornhole and horseshoes.

Also great – but only at District and Council events with the right safety protocols – are Shooting Sports like bb guns, archery and slingshots.

Listing an Adventure in a Handbook column does not mean that it may only be done by Scouts at that rank.  In some – but very few – cases, there will be an age appropriate element that should limit a Scout from doing the Adventure, like Bear Claws (where actual knife work should not be done by Scouts younger than 3rd Grade.  But otherwise, if a Scout, family or den is keen on an Adventure, do it. If completed, you can award the loop or pin if you like – it’s just a loop or pin if you’re not working on that rank in that Handbook.  More at this Adventures for All Ages page.
